The Early Years
Ever since I was a small child, I wanted to own my own business. I was always fascinated by how people make, spend and invest money. By the time I was ten years old, I had borrowed my parent’s lawn mower and started my own lawn mowing business. At the same time, I was selling greeting cards door-to-door through the neighborhoods. When I turned eleven, I was able to get my first paper route and I rode my bicycle six days a week delivering newspapers. By the time I was fourteen, I had built that paper-route to the largest one in the company.
As I grew older, Boy Scouts and athletics began to occupy more of my time, but I still worked every summer. About the only work available for teenagers in those days was manual labor on farms and ranches, which I did a lot of. When I turned eighteen, I was able to get my first “real” job, roofing houses for minimum wage in west Texas during the summer. I thought it was the greatest job ever.
I attended Southern Methodist University on a football scholarship and, after graduation, I joined the U.S. Air Force where I served as a C-130 pilot for six years. While in the Air Force, I had plenty of time to figure out what I really wanted to do for a career. I discovered my true passion was financial planning.
Starting My Career
In 1979, I couldn’t find any firms doing financial planning. The industry was so new, there were very few opportunities available. So, I started my career in the financial services industry as an investment broker with Eppler Guerin & Turner. After about five years I moved to A.G. Edwards because they were the only major brokerage firm that I knew of at the time that was doing financial planning. In 1988, I left A. G. Edwards to become independent and finally accomplished my goal of running my own business. In 1990, with a partner, I started a financial planning firm called Fortune Financial Services, LLC. I served as it’s CEO for over twenty years. In 2011, Fortune Financial split into two new firms, one of which was Wealth Management Group, LLC. I was the founder and have served as its president ever since.
My Role Today
As an advisor, I work with my clients and their families to address all aspects of wealth management, including wealth protection, wealth enhancement, wealth transfer and charitable giving. Typical clients are successful small business owners, professionals or retirees who have a net worth somewhere between one and twenty million dollars. Most of my clients have worked hard to create their wealth and we make sure their wealth works for them. We help pre-retirees and retirees prepare for and make the sometimes difficult transition from working and saving to retiring and spending.
Regardless of what service I’m providing, my goal is to relieve the burden of wealth management so that my clients have the freedom to do those things they really enjoy. There are, after all, things in life that are more important than money.
The Difficulties and Benefits
As most of my business owner clients will attest, owning your own business comes with many challenges. Our profession is rapidly and constantly changing. In nearly four decades as an advisor, I have witnessed an industry that has, from its earliest stages, evolved into a true profession. The exciting thing about all the changes is that they are working for the benefit of our clients and other consumers, allowing them to receive better quality advice, lower cost services and more transparency.
It’s so fulfilling to work one-on-one with clients and build mutually rewarding, long-term relationships with them. My business is my hobby and I truly love what I do. This passion motivates me every day in my career.
